The LEGACIES Project
Understanding how historical states have shaped dissent and democracy
Project Background
Today's political map is divided into about 200 sovereign states. Two-hundred years ago there were hundreds more, most of which no longer appear on modern maps. Nigeria and India encompass many historical states, while Thailand and Vietnam encompass few. What are the legacies of these historical states? This project aims to unravel how historical states have influenced dissent and democracy in the contemporary world, leveraging new data on the presence and location of historical states from 1750-1920.
The LEGACIES project is generously supported by the European Research Council and the Norwegian University of Science and technology and builds upon work funded by the Norwegian Research Council
